Students from all over the world were welcomed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, during the reception ceremony held today for its two foreign language undergraduate departments.

These are students of the English-language BA Program in the Archaeology, History, and Literature of Ancient Greece – the first English-language undergraduate program implemented in a Greek University -, which is operating this year for the third year with a total of 64 undergraduate students from 21 countries (Egypt, Albania, Australia, France, Germany, Georgia, El Salvador, United Arab Emirates, USA, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Great Britain, Norway, South Africa , Holland, Ukraine, Poland, Sri Lanka) and students of the English-language Medical Degree Program, which will operate this year for the first time, with the participation of 40 students from 11 countries (England, Germany, USA, India, Jordan, Canada, Cyprus, Lebanon, Maldives, South Africa and Finland).

The ceremony was attended by, among others, the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Niki Kerameos, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andreas Katsaniotis, the Rector of the University of Athens Thanos Dimopoulos, the Professor of Medicine and President of the Medical School of Athens Petros Sfikakis and the Professor of Philology at the University of Athens Eleni Karamalegkou , whom the Minister congratulated for their tireless efforts to strengthen the extroversion of Greek HEIs.

During her presentation at the students’ reception ceremony, the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameos, underlined as an absolute priority the extroversion of Greek Universities as well as the importance of international academic partnerships. To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Education has developed a strategy with three axes:

Provision of extensive financial tools to support universities in this endeavour, with: 20 million euros for internationalization actions for Greek HEIs 60 million euros for the visiting professors program

Establishing a new legislative framework which provides: further freedom for Greek universities to establish a wider range of partnerships (e.g. joint/double degrees, joint research centres, summer and winter study programmes, English-language programmes) and automatic academic recognition of degrees by abroad, abolishing individual applications to DOATAP for title holders from recognized institutions.

Initiate strategic partnerships with key players such as Europe, United States, United Kingdom, among others.

It is recalled that in November representatives from 30 leading American universities, who are interested in synergies with Greek universities, are expected in our country.
