The most bohemian and brewing regions of São Paulo, the west side and the center always received with a smile on their faces the diners from the east side, who don’t mind traveling dozens of kilometers looking for a good craft beer.
On the other hand, fans of special beers from ZL, the most populous side of the city, need less and less to travel long distances to find great suggestions.
This beer scene grew and appeared even more in the face of the adversity of the Covid-19 pandemic, which left bars and restaurants behind closed doors. The long period of deliveries and limited hours has caused many brewers to approach their own neighborhood. Plus, the East Side offers more reasonably priced real estate that’s easier to get around for those who’ve experienced periods of downtime — or limited activity.
To attract consumers in the region — and at the same time lower the cost of shipping its beer, made in Pinheiros — the traditional Cervejaria Nacional opened a strategic point in Tatuapé, which delivers labels such as amber ale Kurupira, india pale ale Mula or pilsen Y-Iara in neighborhoods such as Vila Carrão, Vila Alpina, Vila Prudente and nearby.
Also during the pandemic, the prestigious artisan Dogma, which has its main taproom in Santa Cecília, in the central region, opened a large factory of 1,200 m² in Mooca, with a capacity to produce up to 50,000 liters and will soon be open for visitation and tasting. .
In recent months, Van der Ale, who was born in Barra Funda and lived for a while in Vila Madalena, also found in a house in Mooca a new home for his self-made labels.
But there are also the “ZL-root”, such as Armazém 77, a brewpub fueled by the styles of Cervejaria 77, many of them seasonal, which vary a lot according to the time of year. This is the case of Aloha Hell, a pumpkin ale that is successful on Halloween.
You can also find traditional pubs in ZL, with typical English beers served in pint, such as St. John’s Irish Pub, on the bustling Rua Itapura, in Tatuapé (or in Vila Gomes Cardim, for purists); or others that mix mainstream beers with national crafts, such as Tatuapé Brew Cave, in Cidade Mãe do Céu, with labels from breweries such as Three Monkeys and Octopus, Stormy, from Campinas, São Paulo’s Dogma (now nearby), or an IPA session of Goose Island, a beer originating in Chicago that is also made at the brewhouse in Largo da Batata, in Pinheiros. Everything within reach of ZLers.
