In total punishment imprisonment of 19 years a 40-year-old man who sat on the bench of the Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki accused of attempted to kill his 39-year-old ex-partnerwhom he previously attempted to rape, in front of their minor child.

The incident took place last December, in the center of Thessaloniki, with the victim escaping thanks to the timely intervention of the police, who rushed to the scene, broke down the door of the apartment, disarmed and finally arrested the perpetrator.

The Court found the 40-year-old unanimously guilty of, among other things, attempted murder and rape, without recognizing any mitigating circumstances, “showing” him the way to prison, after the appeal was decided to have no deterrent effect.

According to the referral will, the 40-year-old, originally from Georgia, maintained a romantic relationship with his 39-year-old compatriot until 2014, having also had a child out of wedlock. They have since severed their relationship, but cohabited in the same apartment, in which the victim had allocated a room to the accused for his stay.

The bloody incident took place on the morning of December 18, 2021. The 39-year-old had just returned home when the 40-year-old came out of his room and started talking to her, but she ignored him, which seems to have angered him. Then, as stated in the will, the perpetrator threw her on the floor and then on the sofa, removing her clothes. As the woman tried to resist, a struggle ensued between them, with the perpetrator grabbing a knife (with a 10 cm blade) and injuring her in the neck. However, she managed to escape by finding refuge in the bathroom, from where she called 911 on her mobile phone.

Enraged, the defendant – then – opened the bathroom door and holding the knife he took her out, whereupon a second episode ensued, in which he threatened to kill her if the police came. Within a few minutes, police forces arrived at the scene, and hearing the voices broke down the door, entering the apartment. The patient was taken to the hospital for first aid.

“I was saved by luck”

“I don’t know how I survived, I was lucky”, said the 39-year-old, unraveling the tangle of the “nightmare” that – as she said – she experienced. “He said that he would kill me and that I would not escape. He tried to rape me, in front of the child. I thought I was done, that I was going to die. I had a lot of blood […] Luckily the knife didn’t cut. I had hidden the other (knives) that cut […] Until the police came, I had the knife in my throat”, said the victim, testifying at the Court.

One of the four police officers who were charged was asked to describe the incident and – among other things – testified: “We heard screams, the woman was desperately calling for help. We made the decision to break down the door. Entering we saw the woman curled up on the floor covered in blood, naked from the waist down. Above her was the perpetrator. He was holding a knife and was trying to injure her vital organs. He didn’t even expect us to enter. He began to self-harm. We got him in a headlock and pinned him down. The knife had disintegrated. It was a single-edged knife, sawn…”

“I just wanted to hurt her”

In his plea, the accused denied the charges of attempted murder and rape, claiming that he was under the influence of alcohol and that he only wanted to injure the woman. “She came in the morning, she was dressed provocatively and drunk. I asked her where she was and if she wants a family. He came out of the bathroom and said to me: “I got the police, you die in prison”. I took the knife, I made a fuss. It didn’t cut, I wanted to injure her,” he said.

It is noted that the Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos visited the four police officers a month later at the AT Lefkos Pyrgos, congratulating them for their professionalism and their crucial intervention.
