Report of POEDIN to the prosecutor’s office for the intubated outside the ICU

A report to the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office will be submitted by POEDIN next week, in order to investigate the management of intubated patients outside the Intensive Care Units. The Prosecutor’s Office intervened for the statements of the President of POEDIN Michalis Giannakou about ICUs held for VIP patients.

POEDIN asks the prosecutor to investigate whether the priority order of intubated registration outside the ICU in the waiting list of EKAB – EKEPY for ICU is observed and why the beds are not reserved for patients and gaps appear.

“Based on the information system of the Ministry of Health, it appears that there are 647 ICU beds for coronavirus patients. Dozens of empty ICU beds appear in the system every day. The Ministry of Health announces a coverage rate of ICUs below 100%. Based on the daily update of EODY for coronavirus cases, it results that intubated coronavirus patients outside the ICU consistently exceed 100 patients per day. “Many remain outside the ICU for many days”, POEDIN emphasizes in its announcement.

The announcement of POEDIN makes a specific reference to the case of the Metropolitan of Agrinio for whom an ICU bed was found within a few hours “unlike a 58-year-old patient with underlying diseases who was intubated in a clinic for more than five days as his wife complained after the noise. The next day, an ICU bed was found in a hospital in Ioannina “.

Reference is also made to patients who are intubated outside the ICU, with substandard equipment and poor nursing care due to staff shortages, according to POEDIN.

Why are beds not bound to patients and gaps appear?

We found out on Wednesday 1/12/2021 at the Hospital of Agrinio Metropolitan found an ICU in a few hours in contrast to a 58-year-old patient with underlying diseases who was intubated in a clinic for more than five days as his wife complained and after the noise caused the next day ICU bed in a hospital in Ioannina.

There are consistently more than 100 intubated patients in most hospitals in the country who are outside the ICU either in simple wards of clinics or in operating rooms or Intensive Care Units. The equipment for most is substandard. Medical and nursing care is flawed due to tragic staff shortages. Many of the intubated patients outside the ICU lose their lives.

Although the view established by the government through the Prime Minister that mortality outside the ICU is not divergent in relation to patients outside the ICU, this is disputed by scientific criteria by intensivists. Doctors, nurses and other staff exaggerate in order to provide safe services. But the tragic staff shortages, the exhaustion to the point of fainting, the shortages in ICU beds do not allow it.

Therefore, a public prosecutor’s investigation should be carried out in order to investigate the hospital conditions and to take measures to ensure the health of the intubated patients.
