One traffic lane was given, says the GADA announcement
THE General Police Directorate of Attica (GADA) issued a statement about the incidents that took place last night in the center of Athens during a protest march against energy precision, carried out by various unions.
According to GADA, the protesters in their effort to occupy all traffic lanes of Stadiou Street they attacked the police forces, which had been allocated to demarcate the march. The police pushed them away, while limited use of necessary means was also made.
The GADA announcement in detail:
“At 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022, following a call from various Organizations and Associations, a gathering of approximately 400 people took place in Klathmonos Square. For the above gathering, a Decision of the Athens Police Directorate (in accordance with Law 4703/2020 on “Public outdoor gatherings”) had been issued and communicated to the organizers, which demarcated the subsequent march that would take place, occupying a traffic lane on the street Stadium, in order not to obstruct the movement of vehicles.
At 8:00 p.m., the march of people began, with continuous stops and an attempt by the marchers to occupy all the traffic lanes of Stadiou Street. At 8:30 p.m., at the height of Voukourestiou Street, the demonstrators attacked the police forces that had been allocated to demarcate the march, in order to break them up and occupy the entire roadway, disrupting the socio-economic life of the center of Athens.
The police forces repelled them, initially with the use of shields and then due to the continuous effort of the demonstrators to occupy the entire roadway of Stadiou Street, with limited use of the necessary means. Then the march continued demarcated, in two traffic lanes of Panepistimi Street and finally ended at the Propylaia of the University of Athens, where at 21:30 it ended smoothly”.
