An eight-year-old female bear was released from an illegal trap in Florina

It was found to be a female, eight years old and weighing approximately 100kg, which had been caught in a wire noose (illegal trap) at the chest point, possibly trying to get through the fence.

The release of a bear, which was trapped yesterday morning in the fence of the forest service’s game farm at the Agios Panteleimonas hill in Florina, was successfully completed.

As the Ministry of the Interior made known, immediately after the detection of the trapped wild animal, the fire service informed, at 11:30, the responsible forest department, which activated the Intervention Team of the Regional Unit of Florina, responsible for managing bear approach incidents and other wildlife species in populated areas.

The response of all the agencies involved was immediate and within two hours the release of the animal was achieved, after it had been stunned by the veterinarian of the University of Thessaly collaborating with KALLISTO.

It was found to be a female, eight years old and weighing approximately 100kg, who had been caught in a wire noose (illegal snare) at the chest point, possibly trying to get through the fencing.

Since the animal was not injured, it was assessed that it did not require further treatment.

In collaboration with the forest officials of the Florina forest department and KALLISTO, and after placing a radio collar for its monitoring, the bear was taken to a safe place at a distance of about four kilometers from the settlement, for its reintegration into its natural habitat.

The general secretary of Forests, Konstantinos Arabosis, said in this regard: “The immediate reaction of the forestry services and the excellent cooperation of all the services and agencies involved, based on the prescribed action protocol, proves the high readiness and vigilance of the regional services of the general secretariat of Forests and the dynamics of synergies with all cooperating agencies.
