Hot dog pastry becomes an attraction in a cafeteria in downtown SP

Yes, hot dogs turned into a pastry filling. Sausage, corn, peas, mustard, ketchup and, of course, potato straw make up the recipe for Pastel da Barão, in downtown São Paulo, which uses fried dough instead of the traditional bread.

The house specialty is the pastel, which has 96 variations of filling on the menu, divided into sections such as the traditional ones (R$ 9.90 each), the most filling (R$ 12.90 each), the differentiated (for up to 18.90 a unit), vegetarian (R$ 11.90 a unit), specials (R$ 19.90 each) and sweets (R$ 9.90 each).

The Dogão Frito, as the creation that is inspired by the hot dog is called, enters the category of specials. With 24 cm, the option comes with two whole sausages cut end to end, plus the typical fillings of the hot dog from São Paulo. The only thing missing is the mashed potato.

The recipe is so successful in the place that it appears in pictures on the walls. But there is also another sausage frying. Called Pastel de Barão, it takes the sausage in slices accompanied by cream cheese, cheddar and potato straw. At 18 cm, it costs R$ 14.90.

“I inherited the recipe from the former owner”, comments Martinho Alencar, who runs the business. “He said you could fill pastel with everything, so he decided to make a hot dog.” The previous owner maintains another snack bar in Praça Dom José Gaspar, which is close to Pastel da Barão.

Inside the Nova Barão gallery, the store is a snack bar with an extensive menu of snacks, sandwiches, smoothies and juices — in addition to nearly one hundred pastries. There are also varieties of hot dogs, which can be pressed, and classic sandwiches, such as the barbecue, with 120 g of meat, and the bologna, both on French bread. “These two are the most requested”, says Alencar.

To accompany the pastel, you can order sugarcane juice, from R$4.90 a glass. There is also a long list of fruit juices, which can be combined with orange (R$9.90), yogurt (R$10.90) and guarana (R$10.90), for example.
