Rape of a 12-year-old girl in Kolonos – ESIEA: Immediately remove the TV crews from the girl’s house

Intervention of the Union of Editors and for the presentation of the subject of the 12-year-old in order to ensure the privacy of the identity of the minor

Intervention to present her topic 12 years old in order to ensure the privacy of the minor’s identity, the Union of Editors did, calling on the news directors of the television stations to immediately withdraw the crews outside the girl’s house and not to publish information that could lead to her identification and re-victimization her.

Particularly, the ESIEA announcement states:

“The Board of Directors of ESIEA, like the entire Greek society, is watching with horror the developments in the case of sexual abuse and exploitation of a 12-year-old child, as well as the unrestricted coverage of the matter by some of the media, especially some television stations.

We call on the information directors of the television stations to immediately withdraw the television crews from the child’s home and to strictly refrain from publicizing any information that may lead to the identification of the 12-year-old and her re-victimization.

We remind you that the European and Greek legislation on broadcasting programs, on the protection of personal data, and of course the Principles of Journalistic Ethics as well as the international Conventions on the Rights of the Child clearly define that the media and journalists have an obligation to protect children age and respect the individual’s personality. Any violation of this mission will result in severe legal and disciplinary sanctions.

ESIEA’s Board of Directors addresses letters to the National Radio and Television Council and the Personal Data Protection Authority in order to address the matter. It is also addressed with letters to the information directors of the television stations in order to immediately stop the abuse of journalism through, without ethical and moral limits, the coverage of this specific case.

We also remind you that the presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle of our legal culture, which the media and journalists must respect. Information about unproven involvement of the accused’s family environment can lead to irreparable damage to their personal and professional life and is morally and ethically reprehensible.”
