New study: Forties interested in buying an electric car

The average age of those interested in buying an electric car, whether male or female, is close to 40 years old, according to new research from business consultancy Savanta.

The new data contradicts earlier research (showing that data is constantly changing) which found that the average premium EV buyer was a 50-year-old male.

When asked if they would seriously consider purchasing a premium EV the next time they shopped for a vehicle, 53% of men and 51% of women said they were “very likely”, showing that interest in purchasing an electric car is now equally shared across two genders.

Also, the use of digital marketplace applications is on the rise, but dealership premises are still considered necessary for selling new cars.

Through these areas, the prospective buyer wants to experience the digital capabilities of the car, before deciding to buy it.

The research was carried out by Savanta researchers to promote the new model of the Italian company AEHRA that wants to be active in luxury electric cars. Its goal is to make its models available in 2025.

Key findings of the study showed that there are seven different types of premium EV buyers:

  1. the car enthusiast, aged about 42, who is focused on luxury brands,
  2. the one who is close to the age of 37 and is a car enthusiast, focused on luxury brands and many elements of personalization,
  3. the prestige seeker who is close to the age of 37 and wants a luxury brand with lots of personalization elements,
  4. the 51-year-old who makes a special order,
  5. the ambitious near the age of 42,
  6. the classic car seeker who is close to the age of 56 and is attracted to EVs and finally
  7. the traditional 53-year-old car enthusiast who wants to bring the electric car into his life.
