The role of the GI research team, within the European Civil Protection program “BALANCE”, was to evaluate the immediate response of the Seismological Institute of Montenegro (IHMS) to the earthquake.
The Geodynamic Institute (GI) of the National Observatory of Athens participated in a large-scale field exercise held in Montenegro.
The exercise mobilized more than 500 people from special disaster response units from Montenegro, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Albania, Italy, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia to simulate the response to an M6.6 earthquake scenario.
The role of the GI research team, within the European Civil Protection program “BALANCE”, was to evaluate the immediate response of the Seismological Institute of Montenegro (IHMS) to the earthquake.
During the first day of the exercise, the GI scientific team evaluated the procedures and actions carried out at the IHMS operational center, in terms of calculating the earthquake parameters (epicenter, magnitude), but also informing the competent bodies and emergency services necessity.
In the framework of the relevant memorandum of cooperation signed between the two seismological agencies, GI provides the Seismological Institute of Montenegro with a long-term loan of surplus seismological equipment.
