Update from the Coast Guard on the migrant rescue operation in Paxos

A total of 88 people were collected, 57 men, 11 women and 20 children, all in good health.

A broad search and rescue operation for foreigners is underway under the coordination of the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center L.S. – EL.AKT. (E.K.S.E.D.).

In particular, it was informed in the morning hours today, the E.K.S.E.D. for the existence of an I/F vessel (a.l.s.) in a difficult position with a sufficient number of foreigners on board, west of Paxos, within the Greek area of ​​search and rescue responsibility.

Passing ships were immediately engaged for any assistance to the above vessel. In the sea area 24 nm west southwest of Paxos, five (05) sailing vessels attempted, which throughout the operation were engaged by the E.K.S.E.D., while the weather conditions that prevailing in the area were S-SW 4 – 5 BF winds.

A total of eighty-eight (88) people (fifty-seven (57) men, eleven (11) women and twenty (20) children), all in good health, were collected from the Danish-flagged F/C “MARIANNE DANICA” and from the /Z ship ”NORWEGIAN GEM” flag Bahamas, which are heading to the port of Igoumenitsa.
