As he pointed out, two factors enter into the equation of the disaster in Crete
Speaking to SKAI, the president of the OAS, professor Efthimios Lekkas, mentioned the causes of the natural disaster caused by the severe bad weather that hit Crete.
As he pointed out, two elements enter the disaster equation.
The first element is risk. The risk was too great since we are dealing with an extreme rainfall which hit especially in a certain point, namely in the area above Agia Pelagia where the slopes of the ground were very strong and where we were dealing with rocks which they were easy to corrode.
“Thus, with great speed, the waters together with the ground, together with the mud, together with objects, together with the cars, went down, so they reached the residential fabric”, explained Mr. Lekkas.
“So that was the danger. It was an extreme phenomenon that essentially comes and defines the climate crisis” he summarized in particular.
According to the professor further, the second factor in the equation is vulnerability.
“Vulnerability to change was very great given that we are dealing with a residential fabric that is anarchically structured, with a river that was essentially closed and could not receive all these loads – and it would not be able to receive them” he said, concluding that as a result of equating vulnerability and risk we have had these very large disasters and loss of human life.
“I have to say this: The rain was so heavy that we were dealing with a huge volume,” he said, noting that the flood control project could receive 30-40 cubic meters per second, and we actually had a volume of 150 cubic meters. per second”.
