Agia Pelagia: Residents count their wounds from Saturday’s deadly flood

Online submission of claims for compensation – 6,000 euros will be given immediately to each affected person

Incalculable are the devastation it left behind, Saturday’s deadly flood in which two people lost their lives and entire areas were destroyed.

The are shocking pictures and the drone videos showing them incalculable damages in Agia Pelagia as well as in other affected areas, such as Paleokastro, Karteros, Gournes, Gouves and Sitia. Roads were turned into rivers, properties were destroyed and many problems occurred in the road network.

Reg. Lekkas: Within 10 minutes the whole disaster happened

“Within 10 minutes everything happened in Agia Pelagia. All this disaster, the flash flood, as we call it, happened in a very short period of time”, said the professor of disaster management, Efthymis Lekkas, who arrived in Crete yesterday as an emergency.

Mr. Lekkas, after conducting a first autopsy on the disasters left behind by the bad weather, spoke of a huge disaster, saying that “the largest amount of rain fell on Agia Pelagia”.

In fact, Mr. Lekkas explained that “With a channeling of the water that fell in the upper area, it swept away volumes of mud and soil along with objects.

It came down like a tsunami wave towards the sea, taking everything away.”

At the same time, the Professor of Disaster Management emphasized that no anti-flooding project would have been able to stop such a disaster “due to the large volume of water but also mainly because the entrances to the projects were isolated by objects, trees, cars that had drifted away and would not they could work.”

Finally, Mr. Lekkas pointed out that this is a phenomenon of the climate crisis and “we have to see how we can manage it”.

Autopsy by the government echelon

An autopsy was performed at noon on Sunday by a government echelon that arrived in the areas affected by the deadly bad weather.

The first stop was Agia Pelagia, which has suffered enormous damage.

The government echelon from the deputy minister of the interior, Stelios Petsa, the deputy minister to the prime minister Christos Triandopoulos, the deputy minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, the g.y. of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment, Efthymio Bakoyannis.

The government echelon saw up close the devastation suffered by Agia Pelagia and then carried out meeting at Malevizio town hall in the presence of the regional governor of Crete, Stavros Arnautakis and the mayor of Malevizio, Menelaos Bokeas.

6,000 euros to each affected person

During the meeting, Mr. Triandopoulos also referred to measures taken by the government for the support of residents, businessmen and the municipal authority.

According to Mr. Triandopoulos, 6,000 euros will be given immediately to each affected municipality of Malevizio (Agias Pelagias, Lygaria, Paliokastro) while 400,000 euros will be given to the municipality of Malevizio in order to restore the road network and the water supply network.

It starts immediately submission of applications for the records of the damages to the businesses affected by the floods in the Municipality of Malevizi from the Region of Crete.
