The case of the 49-year-old lecturer of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who killed his 34-year-old wife and her 85-year-old grandmother with a male, is being revived in the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki. He was sentenced at first instance to two life sentences.
At the beginning of the appellate trial, the university student reiterated his innocence, denying the acts attributed to him. “All the accusations are baseless, baseless and unproven,” he told ordinary and lay judges.
Following the indictment, the Court adjourned for January 10, when the evidentiary process will begin with the examination of witnesses.
“Even the most dangerous serial killers have not committed such crimes”, the prosecutor of the Court of First Instance (Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki) had emphasized in her speech. “He killed his wife, not just once, but as many times as he administered the poison. He saw her melting, paralyzed, she endured this spectacle. He wanted to see it. He remained unrepentant until the end. She deprived a mother of the opportunity to hug her child before she passed away. “He took another man (the grandmother) to link the two acts”, the same prosecutor’s official had stated.
A grandmother and granddaughter lost their lives in August 2013, after being treated at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki, but without first confirming the poisoning by a male. First the old woman died, who was hospitalized for a short time, and a few days later her granddaughter.
From the first moment, the parents of the 34-year-old considered that it was a murder and for that they proceeded to file a lawsuit. Their suspicions were confirmed by the results of extensive laboratory tests and the exhumation of the body. The case was then investigated criminally and as a defendant the lecturer, who was remanded in custody in January 2016, was called to account to the investigator.
