Sitia: The offer of private individuals after the floods is touching – Students and tourists removed mud

A state of emergency has been declared in her area Sitia, which was affected after the catastrophic floods that occurred on the island in the previous days.

Schools were closed and students instead of sitting at home went and helped the affected to remove the tons of mud and carryable materials.

Tourists took brooms and they in turn helped the locals

Restaurants that managed to open today and operate normally prepared food for those who were not so lucky from nature’s fury. Even a dry cleaner has announced that it will accept soiled student clothes for cleaning.

On foot are the cleaning crews of the Municipality as well as private machines, vehicles of DEWAS, the fire service, volunteer groups, employees, private individuals who continue for the 4th day the collection of all brought – damaged materials, and pump water from basements of homes and businesses .

Autopsy by the Chamber of Lasithi

An autopsy was performed on Tuesday morning by a team of the Chamber of Lasithi in order to see the situation up close and to determine the magnitude of the destruction caused by the October 15th disaster.

The damages caused both to the infrastructure of the municipality and to the businesses of the city of Sitia are so great, that in many cases of businesses we have total destruction.

The delegation of the Chamber of Lasithi met with the mayor of Sitia, with representatives of the trade association, the catering and leisure association, the association of hotels in the district of Sitia and also with the association of accountants, tax technicians and freelancers.

In the announcement they state:

“As the Lasithi chamber WE REQUEST:

the immediate suspension of all business payments to the public, banks and public utility organizations as well as any arrangements not to be classified as overdue
the immediate payment of restart capital and the possibility of suspending work according to covid standards in the affected areas.

We wish good strength to our Sitia fellow citizens, we stand by the side of all entrepreneurs and professionals in the area, supporting and presenting their requests in order to receive the necessary support to continue to exist professionally”.
