On October 21, 1912, the martyred island threw off the Turkish yoke and joined Greece

The 110th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Fishermen from the Turkish Yoke was celebrated with all splendor and solemnity on October 21, 1912.

On the day of the Anniversary, there was a morning greeting of the historic day with joyous bell-ringing from the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

Afterwards, in the presence of municipal and military authorities, a delegation of the island’s unions, students and teachers of the schools, the official eulogy was performed.

The ceremonial address of the day was made by the master of ceremonies and Director of High School – High School Classes of Fishers, Makaris Dimitris, referring to the events of the liberation.

Along the coastal road, the students of the schools paraded paying tribute and then in the Holocaust Heroes’ Square a memorial service was held in memory of the fallen.

This was followed by the laying of wreaths by the Mayor of Heroic Fisherman’s Island, the police and port authorities, the educational community, the cultural associations “Konstantinos Kanaris” and “Adelfotis Psarianon” as well as the professional fishermen’s association.

A minute’s silence preceded the playing of our National Anthem. The anniversary celebration ended with recitations of poems by the students of Psara Primary School and traditional dances by the dance classes of the students of Psara Primary School and High School. The end was marked by a treat from the Municipality to all participants.

We celebrated with all splendor the 110th anniversary of the liberation of Psara and its integration with the motherland on October 21, 1912. It was Monday, October 21, 1912 when the destroyer-reconnaissance ship IERAX, commanded by Vice Captain Antonis Vratsanos, sailed to Psara and signaled her bell of freedom on our martyred island. Happy, free, fruitful and creative birthday to everyone!!”, said the Mayor of Heroic Fisherman’s Island Konstantinos Vratsanos.
