Afternoon hours yesterday Sunday, following the utilization of information from the Security Office of the Port Authority of Thira and in cooperation with the Directorate of Security & Protection of the Maritime Borders, a coordinated operation was carried out to arrest people who traffic migrants from the Turkish coast to Santorini.
A team of the relevant Port Authority, following discreet surveillance in the “EXO GYALOS” area of Karterados, Thira, spotted a suspicious sailing vessel moving near the coast in question.
A patrol boat LS-EL.AKT. sailed immediately to the spot, while it was established that a sufficient number of foreigners were being transported by the use of an auxiliary boat to the shore. During the ensuing coordinated operation, a 25-year-old foreign trafficker whose role was to receive P.E.P.s was arrested. and their further inland traffic. Above ten (10) P.E.P. were arrested as they lacked legal travel documents.
At the same time, in another operation in the area of the Thiras airport, a 24-year-old foreign accomplice of the 25-year-old trafficker was arrested, who tried to escape in a rented car. vehicle, which would be used to transport the foreigners to Thira.
Afterwards, the I/F boat transporting the foreigners, turned off its navigation lights and started to move away from the shores, but was spotted and stopped by the patrol boat L.S.-EL-EL.AKT., whose crew with the assistance of the Special Missions Unit (K.E.A.) of the Thira Port Authority, arrested two (02) more foreigners, aged 28 and 44, alleged to be smugglers – operators of the I/F, while in a control carried out on board twelve (12) more foreigners were found lacking legal travel documents.
A preliminary investigation is carried out by the Thira Port Authority in collaboration with the Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate, which analyzes and processes in depth all the evidence that emerges and investigates the possible extension of the action of the arrested traffickers to other cases, with the same or similar criminal activities .
