“That was really humiliating” – Boris Johnson announced late on Sunday night that he would not be running for the Tory leadership and Prime Ministership.
The former leader of the Conservative Party Ian Duncan Smith ironically stated on Monday that the Boris Johnson he was “begging for votes” at the weekend after he staggered back from the Dominican Republic to try to get back into the Conservative leadership, and into the prime ministership.
Speaking to LBC radio, Smith said: “I think the problem when Boris came in was: firstly, Boris had to do this quite unexpectedly. He had no plan. He didn’t have a team. I think for some reason he expected that when he arrived there would be at least 150 people (MPs) supporting him. And that would grow to a majority, which it didn’t, and suddenly they found themselves fighting (for votes) and begging people for votes.”
“That was really humbling. And then when Rishi and the other (Mortod) said, ‘no, the only deal we’re making with you is a deal that serves us, not the other way around,’ that cost didn’t sit well with him.”
