The young man was temporarily detained last May, when his involvement was identified – along with four other people – in a bloody robbery that took place in August 2019 at a transport company
To be released from the Special Youth Reservation Store of Avlona on the condition that he enrolls in a primary school and attends the educational process, a Juvenile Court ruled for 20-year-old Roma.
The young man, a father of four children, was temporarily detained last May, when it was identified that he was involved – along with four other people – in a bloody robbery that took place in August 2019 at a transport company in Kalochori, Thessaloniki, where during their escape the perpetrators attacked and injured the owner of a security company.
As the accused was 17 years old at the time of the act attributed to him and therefore a minor, the case file was separated with regard to him and he was referred to be tried at the Three-member Juvenile Court of Thessaloniki, unlike his co-accused who – at that time – will be tried as adults before the Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki.
During his pre-trial detention in Avlonas, the 20-year-old began attending the Second Chance School of the particular Youth Detention Center, where he began to learn to write and read, as he had never been to school until then, as he said.
Adjournment of trial and parole
A few days ago it was time for the trial (in camera), but finally the Court adjourned the case due to insufficient evidence. Under these circumstances, his defense requested that his temporary detention be replaced with restrictive conditions. The request was granted and among the conditions imposed on him was to continue the educational process outside of prisons — the other two conditions are to appear once a month at the police station of his place of residence and to be placed under the supervision of a Juvenile Warden. He has already enrolled in a school in Dendropotamos where he has started attending classes.
“I wanted to continue the lessons”
“I’m glad I was given this opportunity. I started school in prison and I wanted to continue the lessons,” said the 20-year-old, who, in order to make a living, helps his peddler father in the street markets, speaking to the Athens Agency.
Paschalis Chatzikontzios, one of his lawyers, for his part, emphasized to the Athens Agency that this is a reformative measure aimed at the smooth social reintegration of the accused, offering the opportunity through the educational process to educate and cultivate his character.
Why is he accused?
The case for which he was brought to trial took place in the early hours of August 23, 2019. According to the case file, along with four of his adult accomplices, broke into the offices of a transport company. In their attempt to find money, the perpetrators ransacked the warehouses, destroying logistical equipment and electronic devices, while removing 500 euros. However, as the alarm sounded, the company’s security company was automatically notified and its owner, who was near the scene, arrived at the scene.
According to the case file, while reversing in the getaway car, the perpetrators rammed the owner of the private security company, hitting his legs, while, when he got up, they attacked him and beat him with metal crowbars, as a result of which he suffered craniocerebral injuries. The victim had to be hospitalized. The identification of the perpetrators resulted – among other things – from the video material that the transport company had.
The 20-year-old accepted only the charges of theft and damage to foreign property, denying the serious act of attempted murder attributed to him. He repeated this position in the Juvenile Court where during the evidentiary procedure the victim – called to identify him – allegedly maintained some reservations. According to information, the judges finally decided to adjourn the case in view of the trial of his co-accused in the (higher) Joint Jury Court so that the minutes (and the decision) can then be presented to give a more secure judicial conviction as to his criminal treatment .
