Digging for about 4 hours in the debris, the 45-year-old woman was found dead after the firefighters and other forces had reached a depth of about 1.5 meters from the pile of rubble.
A great tragedy unfolded at dawn in Ierapetra, specifically in the area of Agia Fotia.
Shortly after 12:00 a.m. a very large rock detached itself from the mountainside and fell on a complex of rented rooms near the beach.
As a result, two apartments were completely destroyed. One of them was empty, though in the other lived a family from Lithuania, which was trapped in the debris.
Two vehicles and men from the Ierapetra Fire Brigade were initially found at the scene, and then very large forces of the Fire Brigade (50 men with 20 vehicles) were called from other parts of Crete, rescuers from EMAK, EKAV and many volunteers from the Red Cross, the Tetrakinis Club etc.
The 51-year-old father of the family was easily extricated from the apartment without serious injuries, but the 9-year-old boy was crushed by the debris and it took a lot of effort to extricate himself after his leg was “stuck” in the rubble.
At the same time, the 45-year-old mother was nowhere to be found and that is where the investigations were focused.
After a great effort digging for about 4 hours in the debris, the 45-year-old woman was found dead after the firefighters and other forces had reached a depth of about 1.5 meters from the pile of rubble.
The 9-year-old boy was transferred from EKAV to the Ierapetra Hospital and according to the first information, despite his injury, there are no fears for his life.
