At the 2nd University Neonatology Clinic-MENN in Papageorgiou, a Breast Milk Bank has been operating since 2019, equipped with the sponsorship of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, ensuring the best food for babies thanks to the donation of mothers who have excess milk.
“Breast milk is the gold standard for the nutrition of infants, because it is uniquely adapted to meet their needs”, points out the director of the 2nd University Neonatology Clinic – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, AUTH professor Elisavet Diamanti, on the occasion of the 4th Breastfeeding Clinical Training, organized on November 5, in the Papageorgiou hospital auditorium.
“Breastfeeding and breast milk offer significant benefits to both the mother and the newborn, while the role of well-informed health professionals is considered crucial for the promotion of breastfeeding. Therefore, they, and especially pediatricians, must make every effort to create and promote safe and supportive conditions for mothers who choose to breastfeed. The Covid-19 pandemic has negatively affected the promotion of breastfeeding. But it confirmed, once again, how wonderful this “living tissue” is in protecting the health of babies,” notes Ms. Diamanti.
The 4th Breastfeeding Clinic has as its subject the “Guidelines for the promotion of breastfeeding & administration of breast milk in clinical practice – CDC 2022”, it is organized on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week (November 1-7) and is aimed at health professionals, such as neonatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, midwives and nutritionists.
The Workshop will take place in the Hospital auditorium (8:00-16:00) and during its duration the Clinic’s scientists will seek to highlight the advantages of breastfeeding for the survival and proper development of newborns, but also for the health of mothers.
