About 17,000 acres burned on Greek soil and another 3,200 on Bulgarian soil
In Chionorema, an inaccessible and steep area, has been focused on extinguishing the fire on Mount Papikio in the Rhodopes, which began on October 22.
According to the data of the Fire Brigade, with the largest part of the perimeter of the fire having been controlled, 320 firefighters with 31 water vehicles, 20 groups of pedestrian units, with the assistance of the Greek Army and the Local Government with project machinery, are still operating in the area today to create fire zones.
Based on vector data issued by the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service (EMS), the total burnt area as of Saturday 5 November 2022 at 08:43 was 20162 hectares. From – until 5/11 – total burned area 16960 acres corresponded to Greece and 3202 acres to Bulgaria.
The complete mapping of the burnt area will be carried out by the National Forest Fire Observatory (NFOO), when satellite images (Sentinel-2) without clouds and active fronts are available.
The photo shows the perimeter of the burnt area corresponding to Greece (blue border) and Bulgaria (green border), according to Copernicus EMS vector data on 5/11/2022.
The mapping of the burned area by the Copernicus EMS service was done with SPOT 6/7 satellite data.
The maps of the burned areas are used directly by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the local forest offices, so that they can be immediately declared reforestable. EpaDap is a collaboration between the General Directorate of Development, Forest Protection and Agri-Environment of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Trans-Balkan Environment Center, which is financed by the Green Fund.
