They pretended to be… employees of the Municipality wearing a fluorescent vest and “breaking” houses in Northeast Attica

Two citizens (42 and 31 years old) were arrested as part of the spontaneous procedure, at midday on 9-11-2022 in the Prefecture of Heraklion, by police officers of the Northeast Attica Security Sub-Directorate of the Attica Security Directorate, as members of a gang that committed distinguished cases of theft by profession. Two more national members of the gang, a 52-year-old and a 48-year-old, were identified and are being sought.

After using information and targeted searches, the above police officers managed to locate the business vehicle in Neo Heraklion and immobilize the above occupants arrested.

What did the investigations find?

In a check carried out in the business car, a laptop computer, -5- watches, sunglasses, a lot of jewelry, a metal clip, the sum of -600- euros and a fluorescent work vest with an inscription referring to a Municipality employee were found and confiscated.

As it was ascertained, the objects had been removed from a single-family house in N. Heraklion, which they entered by breaking the kitchen window with a sharp object.

From an investigation by the above police officers, it emerged that the above were active in burglaries and thefts from houses with a specific methodology in areas of Northeast Attica (N. Heraklion, N. Ionia, Kifissia, Metamorfosi, Marousi) at least since the month of August of this year.

How did they act?

In terms of their mode of action, those arrested used to go during the morning hours to the above areas and explore single-family houses, looking for the one suitable for this purpose. They then proceeded to break into it gaining access to the interior by damaging the windows. Subsequently, they searched the premises and removed sums of money, jewelry and valuables.

The fluorescent vest

A characteristic of their action was the effort not to be noticed and for this purpose the member of the gang who approached the house, wore a fluorescent work vest that refers to a Municipality employee.

The gang members operated in a three-man formation each time, with two men physically present during the burglaries and the third acting as a bouncer. The 48-year-old, who was the owner of the business vehicle, provided cover to the perpetrators, so that it would be difficult to link the perpetrators to the acts.

From the preliminary investigation so far, a total of (7) cases of burglary-theft have been solved.

The arrested persons were taken to the Criminal Prosecutor of Athens, while the investigation into the arrest of the other members of the gang, as well as the investigation of other burglaries, continues.
