The CoE rejected the request of residents of Exarchia to “freeze” the Metro projects

Turned down the Application resident of Exarchion who asked the president of the 5th Department of the Council of State, vice-president Margarita Gorzolidos, by her temporary order, to “freeze” the decisions by which the projects for the construction of the Metro station in Exarcheion Square and the occupation of said square.

In more detail, the residents of Exarchia (now the request for the issuance of a temporary injunction) request the suspension and annulment of the decision of 7.10.2022 of the General Director of Environmental Policy of the Ministry of Environment and Energy which approved the projects for the construction of the Metro station in the square Exarchia and the decision of the Minister of Infrastructure from 10.5.2021 which approved the occupation of Exarchia square for the construction of the “Exarchia” Metro station.

In their applications, the residents argue that the creation of a Metro station in Exarcheion Square will cause irreparable damage, as it will bring about the complete destruction of the plant capital and the aesthetic character of the square in question, but will also cause damage to the socio-economic life around the square. Furthermore, the residents claim that the contested decisions were issued without prior consultation with the residents of the area, so that they could submit their opinions to find alternative solutions, while at the same time, the works started in Exarchion square before the preparation and approval of the Technical Environmental Study (TEPEM).
