It is 8 meters high, made of wood and is a faithful copy of a lyre brought from Paiport, Turkey in 1923 by the refugee Charalambos Passalidis
The unveiling of a beast in the size of a Pontic lyre took place on Sunday, the Pentavryso of Eordaia.
Its height reaches 6.67 meters and with its base exceeds 8 meters, it is made entirely of wood and is a faithful copy of a lyre brought to his new homeland in 1923 by the refugee Charalambos Passalidis from Paiport, Turkey.
His great-grandson Yiannis Passalidis, who was president of the Community after 2019, made it his goal in his term of office to build a faithful replica of the lyre that his great-grandfather, the organist, brought from Pontus in a prominent place in the village to remind the younger generation of the refugee identity of the village but also that the lyre as a musical instrument offered courage and joy in the difficult conditions faced by the refugees in their first years in Greece.
The young Yiannis Passalidis did not manage to see his vision completed after he suddenly passed away, but the craftsman Nikos Kosmidis completed the work of its construction following the original plans.
Kostas Passalidis, a relative of the late president of the Community, in his short greeting during the modest unveiling ceremony organized by the Municipality of Eordaia, said that “the unveiling of this project in Pentavrisos will tell the world the story of the persecuted refugees who survived the Genocide and took root in their new homeland offering culture and honoring their tradition and history”
