Mount Athos: The awe-inspiring ossuary – cemetery at the Xenophon Monastery – Photo – video

The modest space of the ossuary is surrounded by silence, myrrh and a few candles.

A unique and modest cemetery has been created on Mount Athos by its monks Holy Monastery of Xenophon with the sea in the background, where the space is dominated by the ossuary, in which the bones of monks are kept.

In several monasteries of Mount Athos, the Monasteries keep the bones in special ossuary, while a person in charge of the space is appointed. Also, the graves are neither marble nor in imposing monuments, but each grave is covered only with soil and a wooden black cross. On the cross they write the date of the monk’s sleep, the age he was when he died and the monk’s name (if he was a hieromonk it is noted).

The least amount of time the bones will remain in the grave it’s three years. They usually stay much longer. If there is a need to bury a dead person, the bones of the oldest person are exhumed. In most monasteries there are special ossuary, where the skulls and bones of old monks are kept in cupboards, while cemeteries are usually surrounded by a low enclosure.

In the Xenophon Monastery of Mount Athos, the bones and skulls of the monks, as you will see in the GRTimes.gr photos, are placed inside a “cave” and in different places.

Finally, the modest space of the ossuary is surrounded by silence, myrrh and few candles.
