Nelson de Sá: On the external coverage, Lula becomes a ‘hero’, ‘rockstar’, ‘exuberant’

by

The American press is the least restrained in terms of reception of Lula’s speech and presence in Egypt. Even before he spoke, The New York Times published on its home page the report “Expectations are high with an exuberant Lula speaking at the climate summit” (above). Opening the text, updated:

“Brazil’s president-elect arrived — and electrified the meeting. The enthusiasm was palpable here for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known simply as Lula. Mr. Lula addressed summit attendees amid exuberant supporters who sang him a rendition from the commemorative ‘Ole, ole, ole!’ [sic]🇧🇷

In the title of the also American Bloomberg, “Lula’s promise to save the Amazon gets a hero’s reception at COP27” (below):

“Lula drew one of the liveliest crowds at the climate talks, with hundreds of not only journalists and activists, but also indigenous people dressed in traditional clothing waiting up to three hours for the president-elect to arrive. When he entered the room, football chants were sung: ‘Olé, Olé, Olé, Lula Lula!’ [sic]🇧🇷

ROCK STAR

Bloomberg’s environmental newsletter, Green Daily, arrived with the statement “Sharm’s rockstar”, rock star from the city where the conference takes place, Sharm el-Sheikh. In the text:

“Hundreds of people waited for hours. They greeted the leftist leader with applause, selfies and chants of the name he is universally known by: ‘Lula!’ Joe Biden was warmly received by delegates last week, but this was a different reception from any other to a leader.”

Also in the title of the Reuters agency, “Welcome like a rock star, Lula promises to protect the Amazon”. From the AP, “Lula promises a new day for the Amazon”.

‘BRAZIL IS BACK’

Europeans such as Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel and London’s Financial Times and The Guardian emphasized, in their headlines, their declaration that Brazil is back in the world, “Brasilien ist zurück in der Welt” or “Brazil is back”. Also in The Economist magazine:

“Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s next president, was received enthusiastically at the UN climate summit in Egypt. Lula told delegates that Brazil is back.”
