A relevant amendment was submitted to the Parliament – The police will be informed by SMS from the people who are at risk
The establishment of a pilot program for the utilization of the digital application “Panic Button» (panic button), which is installed on smart phonesand notifies the Police in cases of domestic violence, foresees an amendment tabled in the Ministry of Justice bill incorporating a European directive on the exchange of information on third-country nationals.
The bill is introduced for voting, today, in the plenary session of the Parliament. As noted in the amendment, the panic button, which sends a short text message (sms) to the police, refers to incidents of family violence associated with a threat or danger to life or physical integrity, for the purpose of immediate intervention by the police force.
Eligible for registration in the application during the pilot operation of the program are female victims of domestic violence who live in the Region of Attica and the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki, who address the locally competent police authorities or a Consulting Center of the Network of the General Secretariat of Demographic and Family Policy and Equality of Gender (G.G.D.O.P.I.F.) of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
After the end of the pilot application, the “Panic Button” program will be evaluated by the competent services of the Ministries of Labor and Social Affairs and Citizen Protection.

According to the explanatory statement of the regulation introduced by the Ministry of Digital Governance “the purpose of the proposed regulation is the establishment of the “Panic Button” program and the formation of the basic framework of its pilot operation”.
As stated in the report, “for the first time in Greece, the innovative panic button is being used and it is possible to give it to female victims of domestic violence, in order to be able, through their mobile phone, to notify immediately and with safe way to the Greek Police, in case they are in a situation of threat or danger to their lives or their physical integrity”.
With the proposed arrangement, the beneficiaries are provided for installing the application on their mobile phones, as well as the basic operating conditions of the program.
From the end of the pilot operation, which was set to last for one year in the regions of Attica and Thessaloniki, “an evaluation of the program will follow by the competent services of the Ministries of Labor and Social Affairs and Citizen Protection, in order to utilize the results of the evaluation, for the transition to its universalization”.
How the panic button will work
The application is used by selecting the relevant indicator on the mobile phone screen. The police are immediately informed by SMS about the threat or danger to the life or physical integrity of the beneficiary. The SMS includes data on the spatial location of the woman so that the police can intervene to protect her.
