Mitsotakis: The Polytechnic was a prime moment of national uplift – We remember, we honor, we move forward

by

What the people and students claimed in 1973, are now progress, notes the Prime Minister in his message.

“Nearly half a century since the strongest act of resistance against the dictatorship, memory fuels honor. Because the uprising of the Polytechnic is not a museum exhibit, nor an object of usurpation. Combining the collective mobilization for the Republic with the stakes of its future, it does not exhaust itself in the overthrow of tyranny. On the contrary, the request for “Bread-Education-Freedom” travels through History. With the slogan “All United” inspiring the current situation as well”, says Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his message for the Polytechnic’s anniversary.

And he points out: “What the people and students demanded in 1973 are now steps forward. In a democratic, armored and dynamic homeland. Who knows how to overcome crises. And with citizens who feel the State on their side. To reduce taxes and boost their income, raising levees in international precision. But also to firmly hold the steering wheel of development, creating new jobs. So that all Greeks have a share in the national wealth, especially the most vulnerable.

49 years ago, the best Education was at the forefront of the anti-dictatorship struggle. Today our universities and schools welcome the historic anniversary with modern curricula. With digital courses, international collaborations and extroversion, connecting studies with professional rehabilitation. While the students, more mature than ever, refuse blind violence and illegality, restoring academic freedoms in their spaces.

The Polytechnic was a peak moment of national upliftment. Too big to fit into the small party expedients that followed. Because those 3 meaningful days swept away the old divisions like a wave. Establishing the new unity on which the most complete democracy our country has ever known was built. Forty-nine years later, therefore, our common duty is to protect and deepen it. We remember, we honor, we move forward!”.
