In 8 times for life, an additional 50 years of imprisonment (20 suspended) and a total fine of 327,000 euros was imposed by the Mixed Jury Court on the “fake doctor” Nikos Kontostathis, who was unanimously found guilty of seven murders and six attempts.
The sentence of 8 life terms is the third longest sentence imposed on a defendant by the Greek courts in modern history after 17N and the company of killers.
The court sentenced “Dr Thanato” to life in prison for each of the 7 murders and for allegedly drugging his victims.
The sentence was formed by merger and concerns all the criminal acts for which he was convicted.
The Mixed Jury Court of Athens, in essence, adopted the prosecutor’s proposal for 8 life sentences and 12 years imprisonment for each of the 6 attempted murders.
The relatives of the dead as well as the victims of “Dr Kontou” who escaped death by interrupting the unorthodox treatments of the “fake doctor” welcomed the verdict with relief.
With intense emotion and applause from the audience, the president declared the end of the trial
The emotion of the president who closed the trial of Nikos Kontostathis in tears was the last moment of a long process, which today led to the imposition of one of the heaviest sentences that have been imposed by the Greek Justice.
The president of the Mixed Jury Court thanked all the actors of the trial, from the defense lawyers, the civil action lawyers and the secretary of the seat and declared the end of the hearing.
“I want to thank all the actors. I’m emotional… it was a months-long trial that everyone contributed to. I wish that my children will have a path like yours”, she said addressing the factors of the trial.
The dozens of people in the room, hearing the president announce the end of the trial in this particularly human way, applauded her, some crying and shouting their “thank you” to the Justice.
