“If the coronavirus Omicron mutation is prevalent in Britain, it should be considered certain that it will prevail worldwide,” he said. Professor of Microbiology Alkiviadis Vatopoulos speaking on SKAI TV and the show “Today”.
He added that it has not yet been clarified whether Omicron is more contagious but at the moment the data from South Africa and Britain do not show anything impressive in terms of the severity of the disease.
“There are still concerns regarding vaccines, where it seems – at least some of the first studies I saw, we will need a third dose to have a good treatment,” said Mr. Vatopoulos.
He described as extreme the claim that those who have had two doses of the vaccine are unvaccinated because of Omicron, and explained that the two doses provide 50% to 60% coverage.
Asked to comment on Moderna chief physician’s statements about a new super mutation that could result from the combination of Omicron and Delta, the professor said that the virus could evolve in any direction and we do not need to look into the future. He estimated that the virus is more likely to be directed at a more contagious and milder direction.
“In order for all this not to happen, the world population must be vaccinated,” he stressed.
In view of the holidays, he called on the citizens to avoid large gatherings and suggested that a rapid or self test be conducted before the meetings.
