Angry announcement of the legal fraternity of the Monastery, after repeated incidents of violence. They speak of “hood wearers and elements of the underworld”
Bomb molotov which exploded and caused minor material damage was placed by unknown persons outside the house of the lawyer, Diogenes Karagiannakidis, in the Upper Town of Thessaloniki.
“The incident is neither random nor insignificant and is connected to my involvement with the case of the Holy Monastery of Esfigmenos,” said Mr. Karagiannakidis. The lawyer’s wife was at home at the time of the attack who was terrified, while the light rain prevented the fire from starting.
Mr. Karagiannakidis is the legal advisor of the Holy Community, the Holy Monastery of Megistis Lavra and the Monastery of Esphimenou and has even written – together with two other colleagues – the history of the case of Esphimenou from its occupation by the Zealots in 1972 until 2002 and has spoken at conferences and other events on the much-lauded issue.
With its announcement the brotherhood of the Monastery of Esfigmenou points to the Zealots and their followers and states that “the extreme right and the squatters are using each other to their advantage by fanaticizing their audience and turning them against the Sphinxmenite fathers and anyone who comes into contact with them in an attempt to intimidate , exclusion and persecution of the brotherhood of our Monastery from Mount Athos”.
According to reports, unknown people tried to destroy the small photovoltaic park of Esfigmenou Monastery in Ierissos, breaking the entrance to the site, while a fish tavern in Ouranoupoli was attacked with stones, the owner of which helped to pick olives in an olive grove maintained by the legitimate brotherhood near the occupied monastery. Also, there are reports to the police that unknown assailants destroyed two lodges of the brotherhood on the way to the historic Monastery.
“Right next to the konaki of our Monastery in Karyes, the existence of an occupation continues, with the squatters watching day and night with modern high-resolution cameras, photographing and documenting every lay person who enters it, 50 meters from the Prototo and 50 from the Kareon police station. We remind you that the squatters refuse to leave despite the polite appeals of the police”, it is noted in the announcement of the Holy Monastery of Esfigmenou.
