The first technological tool of the Greek State in the fight against violence against women is the Panic Button application.
The prevention and treatment of domestic and gender-based violence is a collective priority and responsibility of societies. A continuous effort that, in order to succeed, requires the cooperation of all forces. Civil Society, organizations, the research community, but also the private sector. A real protection ecosystem for every woman.
In this effort we have a great weapon, the new technologies.
We are used to talking about the dangers of technology and how it has affected various forms of violence. However, technology can be the ideal ally, both in prevention and in treatment. To provide solutions and save lives.
Some examples of solutions using smart technologies are the Live electronic complaint and support platforms, electronic and experiential information platforms, modern educational and pedagogical tools (creative games, video games, simulations, etc.) and finally applications, emergency telephones and the panic buttons in the form of various devices.
The first technological tool of the Greek State in the battle to combat violence against women is the application Panic Button.
Panic Button is a successful example of cooperation between the state and the private sector. The application was created and donated to the public by the Vodafone Foundation and we thank them very much for this.
But what is the Panic Button? An emergency button in the form of an application on a mobile device, which is connected to the familiar 100. Simple to use, but critical, as with one press, a woman in serious danger will inform the Police.
It is a request that women’s organizations constantly make.
What are its advantages?
a) further reduces the information/complaint time for a risk incident,
b) it is very simple to use,
c) it is a silent alarm, the abuser does not realize that the woman notified the Police,
d) works as a deterrent.
Which women will be able to use the Panic Button?
In the first, pilot phase of its operation, it will be able to be used by female victims of domestic and gender-based violence through Police Departments and Counseling Centers of the General Secretariat of Family Policy and Gender Equality, in Attica and Thessaloniki.
Our goal is that when it is fully operational, it will be available throughout the Region and that other women and our fellow citizens, especially the most vulnerable, will have access to it and use it as a weapon against other forms of violence.
After all, this is the future of our security, smart policing. The maximum utilization of new technologies for the benefit and protection of citizens.
Has it been used in other countries?
In many from Bosnia and Turkey to India, France and the USA. It is considered highly successful and is available to women who are at known risk. It is characteristic that few of the women who have access to the relevant application have lost their lives because they did not manage to press the button in time.
But it’s worth trying new media and applications, even if it saves just one woman. This is the task of modern protection states.
