“Medusa 12”: Greek-Egyptian exercise underway – Cyprus, USA and Saudi Arabia participate


The “Medusa 12” exercise aims to strengthen the cooperation of the Armed Forces of the participating countries,

The bilateral interdisciplinary exercise “Medusa 12” between Greece and Egypt, in the wider area of ​​Alexandria, is underway as of today, with the participation of personnel and media from Cyprus, the USA and, for the first time, Saudi Arabia, while they have been invited to participate with observers, France, Germany, India, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Congo, Morocco, Bahrain, Romania and Serbia.

The “Medusa 12” exercise aims to strengthen the cooperation of the Armed Forces of the participating countries, as well as to conduct operational training at an interdisciplinary level and in a multi-threat environment, strengthening the role played by Greece and Egypt in the wider region of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa as pillars of stability and security.

On Wednesday, November 23, a Distinguished Visitors Day (DVDay) is scheduled to be held, in which guests will have the opportunity to watch operational scenarios, including static belt jumps and free-falling by parachutists from helicopters, demolition by the method fast rope, reconnaissance and warship boarding, amphibious operations on the “El Omayed” coast, as well as simulated air strikes by fighter jets.

The “Medusa” series of exercises, which have been held alternately between the two countries since 2015, is part of the Military Cooperation Program (MPC) of Greece and Egypt for 2022.

The exercise will be completed on Friday, November 25.


The Greek Armed Forces participate with personnel and the following means of the three Branches of the Armed Forces, as well as the Special Warfare Command (DEP):

– 4 aircraft (A/F) F-16,

– 4 attack helicopters (EU/P) AH-64,

– 2 helicopters (E/P) CH-47D,

– 2 frigates (F/C HELLI and F/C NAVARINON) with their organic E/P,

– 1 tanker (A/C CHIOS),

– 1 submarine (Y/V KATSONIS),

– 10 inflatable boats,

– 4 wheeled armored vehicles (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle – HMMWVs),

– 1 Underwater Disaster Team of the Underwater Disaster Management (DDYK),

– 1 company of marines from the 32nd marine brigade and

– 1 group of free-fall paratroopers from the Special Paratrooper Department (ETA).

The Egyptian Armed Forces participate with:

– 18 multi-role aircraft,

– 6 helicopters,

– 1 Mistral LHD helicopter carrier,

– 1 frigate,

– 1 submarine,

– 2 corvettes (K/B),

– 2 RHIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat) special operations boats,

– 4 Zodiac Mk V inflatable boats,

– 8 HMMWVs,

– 1 company of special forces of the ground forces,

– 1 team of special forces of the Navy,

– 1 group of paratroopers and

– 1 motorized infantry company (OPFOR).

The Armed Forces of Cyprus participate with:

– 1 AW-139 helicopter,

– 1 general support ship (GSP).

– 1 group of underwater disasters and

– 1 group of special forces – paratroopers.

The Saudi Arabian Armed Forces participate with:

– 1 corvette with its organic helicopter,

– 1 team of special forces (SOF) and

– 1 group of marines.

The US Armed Forces participate with 1 group of Marines.
