The journalist and writer Giorgis Massavetas passed away at the age of 78.

He was a political editor, columnist and editor-in-chief in several newspapers (mainly in “Eleftherotypia” and the local press), while he stood out for his cartoons.

The sad news was announced in a Facebook post by the journalist’s son, Alexandros.

Giorgis Massavetas was born in Piraeus in 1944 and grew up in Kokkinia.

He started writing for local newspapers from 1958 and eventually remained a journalist, although he aspired to become a chemist. He was a political editor, columnist and editor-in-chief in several newspapers.

He stood out mainly for his cartoons, which were published in five books: “In the Battle for Change” (foreword by Andreas Papandreou), “Good Morning Mr. President”, “Good Night Mr. President”, “Good Morning Citizen” and “Andreas’ Legacy” . In 1996, he also published a political chronicle entitled “You Overthrew Mitsotakis”, which became one of the bestsellers of the year.

He first appeared in the literary field in 1975, with the poetry collection “Peaceful Citizens” and ten years later with “Deposition of the Soul”. He has also published a children’s book entitled “Ton Osprian n Giorti”, as well as the collection of short stories “Women’s Stories”, for which Mimis Androulakis called him “Charles Dickens of Greece”.

He has been honored for the column “Good morning Mr. President” with the prize of the Botsis Foundation, with the public advice of Constantinos Karamanlis “not only to read him, but to study him”.

He was a candidate of the United Left in 1974 in Fokida and of PASOK in 1981 in Second Piraeus. In 1987, he was deleted from the Central Committee of PASOK due to the criticism he made from the column “Morning Mr. President” in “Eleftherotypia”.
