The Criminal Court of Corinth sentenced Manolis Douris to life plus 21 years for the rape and murder of his 7-year-old son, Nikolaos Douris.
On November 23, 1994 – almost 20 years ago – the curtain fell on a crime that froze Greece.
The Criminal Court of Corinth sentenced Manolis Douris to life plus 21 years for the rape and murder of his 7-year-old son, Nikolaos Douris.
Twenty-seven months later, on February 24, 1996, “Hermione’s child killer” was found hanged in his cell.
Manolis Douris’ crime – the sexual abuse and murder of his young child – went down in history and in the world’s consciousness as the “first” infanticide, not because it was but because of the massive media coverage. To this day, the designation “Douri” is given to pedophiles and child killers.
The crime that shocked and froze Greece
Hermione’s crime on December 31, 1993 shocked Panhellenium. 6-year-old Nikos, son of Manolis and Georgia Douris, was found dead after having been sexually abused. That New Year’s Eve night, six-year-old Nikos disappeared from the neighborhood where he was playing, causing his parents and six siblings to worry.
The Duris family called the police to report their child missing. The mobilization of the Authorities was immediate, as well as of the entire local community of Hermione, who were “combing” the area to locate little Nikos. Finally, Manolis’ father, together with one of his sons, found the six-year-old dead. His body was hidden in an alana wall, located a short distance from the family’s home.
According to the medical examiner’s report, the child had died of suffocation, as the perpetrator had closed his nose and mouth after first raping him. The family’s pain was unbearable, with his father grieving in front of the cameras and vowing revenge on his child’s killer.
The big twist and the father’s confession
The Panhellenic was watching the progress of the investigation in shock and a little later it was shocked by the big upheaval. The police arrest the father, who confesses to the crime. The contradictions in his testimony and the fact that he found his child’s body in a place that only someone he knew would look for made the police suspicious of him.
