China: Incidents at a demonstration at the country’s largest iPhone factory

by

Some 200,000 workers are employed in the huge factory.

Widespread incidents broke out at the largest production plant iPhone in China, belonging to Foxconn of Taiwan, an external supplier to Apple, show videos and photos uploaded to social networking sites Weibo and Twitter.

The footage shows a crowd of workers protesting in a street and some of them being confronted by security men wearing white overalls and other police in riot gear.

Some of the protesters, brandishing batons, hit surveillance cameras and windows in one of the factory buildings.

Her installation Foxconn located in Jeju, Henan Province (Central).

In some of the videos, workers complain about the treatment they face: the working conditions, the poor quality food they are provided, or even not being paid bonuses they were promised.

Some 200,000 workers are employed in the huge factory.

The facility uses the so-called “closed circuit” system, in other words the workers live in isolation due to the epidemiological situation in Jeju.

Both the restrictions and the dissatisfaction of the workers – many decided to quit – have caused problems in production. Apple announced earlier this month that deliveries of its new phone, the iPhone 14, will be lower than expected in the immediate future.
