Residents are still on alert – Continuous aftershocks in the area

The effects of the 4.7 Richter earthquake in South Evia are limited to material damage, however the residents of the area remain terrified as they stated earlier in evima.grthe earthquake threw them out of bed.

From the first moment the deputy mayor of Kymi, Alexandros Theodorou, was in the village of Zarakes in the Municipality of Kymi Aliveri, where most of the problems are presented both in public buildings, such as the kindergarten in the area, and in residences, with the cracks visible in the images below .

“In cooperation with the president of the community, we are proceeding with the recording of the damages. At the same time, it is important that the relevant ministries of the Interior and Civil Protection launch the necessary procedures for the immediate restoration of the damages”, Alexandros Theodorou told evima.gr.

The seismic tremor of 4.7 Richter woke up the residents, who were quite frightened. A resident of the area expressed his fear to evima.gr “The earthquake was so strong and superficial. We were very scared, it was loud and loud. We were thrown out of bed by the loud noise. People had come out of their houses. Frames and small objects fell into my house,” he said.

Tselentis at evima.gr: 35 aftershocks in Evia after the strong earthquake

About 35 aftershocks in Evia, with some of them even being calculated as stronger than 4 on the Richter scale, said Akis Tselentis, PhD in seismology and director of the Geodynamic Institute, speaking to evima.gr, on the sidelines of the earthquake that hit the island earlier in the morning today.

The professor summarized that this is an unknown submarine fault and the experts cannot yet officially declare that the first earthquake in the morning was the main one.

Based on this, it is unknown not only if additional aftershocks will be recorded but even what magnitude they will potentially be.

Earthquake

The seismic vibration was particularly superficial and for this very reason it was so intense that it was felt not only in Evia but also in Attica and Corinth.

The professor of seismology proceeds with a recommendation to all citizens who have stone and old houses to check their stability and any damage that occurred from the earthquake.

As he mentioned, the area in which the earthquake was recorded is characterized by seismic activity, however, the point in question had never concerned seismologists before, a fact that undoubtedly inspires reflection.
