The reasoning of the Court is based on the fact that the decision to announce the mobilization was not taken by the General Assembly of Employees of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, but by the Employees of Cleaning only

The single-member Court of First Instance of Thessaloniki ruled illegal the mobilization of workers in the Cleaning Sector of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, accepting the lawsuit filed by the administration of the central Municipality. With the same decision, the cessation of mobilization is ordered.

According to what has become known, the reasoning of the Court is based on the fact that the decision to announce the mobilization was not taken by the General Assembly of Employees of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, but by the Employees of Cleaning only. In other words, he considers the body that announced it to be incompetent.

It is recalled that in their extraordinary general assembly and before the lawsuit was discussed in the Courts, the workers had decided to suspend the mobilization and went out into the streets to collect the waste that formed mountains in bins and sidewalks.

“We have never been and will never be against the workers. We have equally satisfied their fair requests over time and we will do something similar in the future. The city, however, cannot and will not allow it to be held hostage – nor is the administration of the municipality being blackmailed by small minorities”, said the mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, on the occasion of the court decision that deems the clean-up mobilization illegal.

He added that “Thessaloniki looks with optimism to the future. Nobody wants us to go back to old recipes and old outdated tactics.”

Mr. Zervas in the same statement clarifies that “the duty of the mayor is the well-being of the city. That is why today we filed a lawsuit against the workers’ refusal to clean. In particular, we filed a lawsuit against the decision of a minority of workers, to protect the city and from the risk of a permanent walkout.

When the cleanliness of the city and public health come into the balance, Justice has the say.”
