Passenger traffic is estimated to reach a total of 51,000 passengers per day, while approximately 5,000 new jobs will be created.
Its expansion is also on track for implementation Line 2 of the Metro to Iliona project of particular importance, which is expected to change the transportation map of Lekanopedi, with the estimated distance to Syntagma lasting 20 minutes, while the route to Omonia takes about 15 minutes.
In the coming weeks, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the auction of the specific project is expected to take place, which is part of the overall planning of the Ministry of Infrastructure to deal with traffic in Attica.
This is a significant extension as it is the first of the red Line 2 since 2013 when it reached Anthoupoli and Elliniko. Attiko Metro’s goal in the coming year is to extend the line to Menidi with three stations that will cross Kamatero and Zefyri.
The underground extension of the Line will start from Anthoupoli and will have a total length of 4km. It will have three new stations: “PALATIANI”, “ILION”, “AGIOS NIKOLAOS”. Two of the three stations are located on Thivon Street, the first (Palatiani station) approximately 1,300 m north of Anthoupoli station and the second (Ilion station) 1,000 m north of the first. The third station (Ag. Nikolaos) is located on Agios Nikolaos Street in Ilion.
Passenger traffic is estimated to reach a total of 51,000 passengers per day, while approximately 5,000 new jobs will be created.
The project’s budget amounts to approximately 500 million euros, while its financing is planned to be covered by co-financing from the new NSRF 2021-2027. The project also includes the 20,000 sq.m. extension of the “Elaion” Depot with maintenance of the rolling stock.
The duration of the projects is set at five years from the signing of the contract.
The auction, as was done in Line 4, will have two phases: it will start with the expression of interest, then it will go to Phase B for the technical offers and then the submission of the financial offers from which the contractor will finally emerge.
With the completion of the extension, Line 2 will reach 23 stations, which will be: Anthoupoli, Peristeri, Agios Antonios, Sepolia, Attiki, Larissa Station, Metaxourgeio, Omonia, University, Syntagma, Acropolis, Syngrou-Fix, Neos Kosmos, Agios Ioannis, Dafni, Agios Dimitrios, Alimos, Argyroupoli, Elliniko, Agios Nikolas, Palatiani, Ilion.
Kostas Karamanlis: Western Attica is changing – Tenders are coming for three major projects
“In Attica, after many years, major projects are starting” declares the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis pointing out “What we are doing as a government is that we do not stop at the announcements of these projects but proceed step by step with planning in their implementation. Works that will change the daily life of citizens and give a boost to our economy”. As far as Western Attica is concerned, we are proceeding with a package of projects that will significantly upgrade the lives of citizens in the wider region. Tenders are coming for three major projects.
“Within the next two months we will put forward a very important project: The Suburban of Western Attica. The tender for this project, amounting to 125 million euros, will be “launched”, financed entirely by the Recovery Fund. The Western Attica Suburban will go from Ano Liosia to Megara.
The second project, which will go ahead in 2022 and “connects” with Metro Line 4, which has already started to be built, has to do with the extension of the Metro to Ilion. A project that will start from Anthoupoli, will pass through Agios Nikolaos, will pass through Palatiani and will end up in Ilion.
Another project, which has been discussed for many decades and will be auctioned in the next period, enters the final stretch: the so-called Western Regional Aigaleo. A project that will reach the old National Road and we will have three uneven junctions, in Schistos, Naupigeia and Skaramanga, decongesting this whole area quite a bit”.
