No evidence of violent death found – The case is under investigation, while tests are being carried out on the seals to determine the cause of the mass death
Thriller and tragedy together… Almost 2,500 seals were found dead on its shores Caspian Sea in South Russia, signaling an alarm to the ecological – and not only – organizations in the region.
Officials who examined them said there was no sign of a violent death.
About 700 dead seals were initially reported, but after investigation, a much higher number was revealed, and the count is still ongoing.
Caspian seals have been classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2008.
THE Zaur Gapizovhead of the Caspian Environmental Protection Center, said the seals likely died about two weeks ago.
“There is no evidence to suggest that the animals were killed or caught in fishing nets,” he said.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Dagestan region wrote on Telegram that a large number were found between the mouths of two rivers, Shulak and Shurinka.
Experts have collected samples from the seals and the ministry said the reasons for the deaths will be ascertained once the laboratory results are in.
The Caspian Sea seal population has declined drastically over the decades from overhunting and industrial pollution.
The Center for the Protection of the Caspian Environment speaks of 70,000 seals, while in the last century, they numbered more than a million.
