“If my daughter hadn’t stepped in to beg him to stop he would have killed me”
The family drama experienced by a 35-year-old mother, who is raising her four children alone – the oldest 17 years old and the youngest 18 months old – unfolded yesterday at the Three-member Criminal Court of Volos, which tried yet another case of domestic violence.
For her and her children, there is no end to the threats against their lives by her ex-husband, 38 years old. The details of what they are experiencing were described in court by the 35-year-old and confirmed by her 17-year-old daughter who was present in the courtroom, describing among others that her estranged husband threatened to kill her. At the time he said this, he was holding an ax in his hands, causing panic in the house. “If my daughter hadn’t stepped in to beg him to stop, he would have killed me,” she estimated, expressing horror.
The 35-year-old has been separated from her ex-husband for almost two years. She lives with her four children. She decided to break up with the 38-year-old because, as was said in court, he was very violent. She often had outbursts and would lash out at the slightest thing.
Also, as she pointed out, her estranged husband finds various excuses on a daily basis to go to the house where she and the children live. Describing various scenes, she said that every time he curses her, threatens to kill her and attacks her with the intention of beating her.
The 35-year-old also said she is in the process of filing a restraining order against him because she fears for her and her children’s lives.
Also, as she revealed in court, she was forced for a while to ask for help from the Battered Women’s Hostel, so that she could protect herself and the children from his anger.
The day before yesterday, the 38-year-old went home once more. As the 35-year-old complained, he attacked her again with the intention of inflicting physical violence on her. The frightened woman called the police.
The 38-year-old who was “present” in court denied all the charges. He claimed that all he cares about is seeing his children. “I went to see them and they didn’t want to. Their mother has turned it against me,” he said in his apology.
The court, however, was not convinced by his arguments. He sentenced him to 21 months. He was also imposed certain restrictive conditions, which if he does not observe, he will be in prison, as it was emphasized.
In this context, he was forbidden to approach the house where his estranged wife and children live at a distance of at least 100 meters, while the condition was imposed on him to present himself once a month to the Police Department.
Finally, his request to be able to see at least the 18-month-old infant will be considered accordingly.
