Serres: “We were playing and Vassilis went to get the ball… plasters and dirt were falling on us” says a 10-year-old who was injured in the explosion

Answers to the questions about what caused the unspeakable tragedy with the death of the 11-year-old student of the 9th primary school in Serres are expected to be given by the experts of the Greek Police who performed an autopsy at the school. The management of the school and the Municipality blame each other for the responsibilities, while the Minister of the Interior gave an order to investigate the possible responsibilities of the local government.

What did the 10-year-old who was discharged say?

It is recalled that in addition to the 6th grade student who died instantly, two other children, 1st and 4th graders were injured. From the explosion, 35 meters long pieces of wall and a metal door were hurled, which fell on the children resulting in the tragic end.

The 10-year-old student, who suffered minor injuries and was released on Monday afternoon, said the incident happened during the all-day school break, when the children went to play ball in the backyard, near the boiler room, in the shed because it was raining.

“We were playing and Vassilis went to get the ball. Suddenly we heard a terrible noise and plasters, stones and metal objects started falling on us, in fact one of them hit my classmate” he said not knowing the tragic outcome of the events.

In fact, at the time the tragedy happened, the 11-year-old’s younger sister was also in the school yard and started looking for him. The 11-year-old was the flag bearer in his class.

The child’s funeral is scheduled for 4 pm at the A Cemetery of Serres. It is noted that today all Primary and Secondary schools in the area are closed as a sign of mourning.
