Georgiadis: There is an open possibility that the beef will remain in the household’s basket even after the holidays

The Minister of Development visited four stores of the “Kritikos”, “Sklavenitis”, “AB Vassilopoulos” and “Masoutis” supermarket chains

The Minister of Development and Investments left it open, Adonis Georgiadesthe possibility of keeping it as an option in the household basket calf and after the holidays.

The minister visited today four stores of the “Kritikos”, “Sklavenitis”, “AB Vassilopoulos” and “Masoutis” supermarket chains, as last week they recorded the largest percentage reduction in the prices of the products in the basket.

The minister noted that “consumers, with their choice to now systematically buy products from the basket every week, have led the chains to reduce prices one after the other.

I’ll just tell you that yesterday we were late getting the cart results card out because from the morning we got the data until the night we pulled the card, one of the chains sent us new lower prices before we even posted the first ones, just to get a better position on the list.

So, we shop from the cart and earn money. The average value of the basket has fallen in six weeks by more than 30% and we are talking about the same products that we compare every week recorded in e-CONSUMER, so that each of you can see the difference.

The holiday basket starts next week. Many expected the kourabiedes and honey macaroons to be in. I decided not to include them. I want to say something. Supermarkets are great, we will support them to have better prices, but supermarkets alone should not live. The bakeries must also live, the pastry shops must also live, the rest of the stores must also live.

We thought it would be too much of an intervention to turn consumers towards supermarkets for an item that traditionally belongs to bakeries and patisseries, so we didn’t include them in the festive one, but put king pie, veal, turkey and chocolates.”

When asked if the calf will continue to be in the basket after the holidays, Mr. Georgiadis said: “We will see about that. We have 3 weeks ahead of us where the holiday basket will work. We’ll watch week by week, we’ll see the adequacy, we’ll see how it goes. If we see that it’s something consumers want and the chains can support, because both play a role, we’ll see.”

He also noted: “I want to thank all the chains that have put their backs and every week they are competing healthily with each other, lowering the prices even more.

There have been in some chains – not the ones I visit because I have a good relationship with them and I want to reward them -, some products that DIMEA found a higher percentage of profit than what the law allows. The check sheets have been sent by the agency and we are waiting for their written explanations and when the process is completed I will go to them as well. But I want to let the administrative process unfold without being affected.

As for the toys, yesterday the companies sent me what they will be including in the “Santa basket”. It won’t be anything “cheesy”. It will be happy, festive, with very good prices. My little friends as well as the slightly older ones will enjoy toys this holiday thanks to the “Santa’s basket”.
