“180 meters and less separated us from the sea, and yet 2.5 hours after the outbreak of the fire was not enough to save us” emphasized P. Dagalos
His testimony is shocking Panagiotis Dagalou for the deadly fire in Mati to SKAI and Sia Kosionis. Mr. Dagalos lost his wife in the blaze of July 28, 2018, while he and his son suffered burns.
“It’s very hard to remember… Every time someone remembers what they went through, it’s like reliving it. No matter how you describe them to the other person, they will always not get the full picture. By luck we live, the house where we lived, they hosted us was located a house above the sea, 180 meters and less separated us from the seaand yet 2.5 hours after the outbreak of the fire was not enough to save us”, emphasized Mr. Dagalos.
“We realized the fire by ourselves, 6:20 I remember it because I looked at the clock when my wife woke us up. We alone perceived it, alone we assessed the situation, alone we decided the way to escape, others condemned us to death. The priority was the child, my wife woke me up, because as the psychologist explained I froze, my mind didn’t work at that moment, my wife basically saved us, that is, she just shouted inside the car that we were trapped 180 meters away from the beach 2.5 hours after the outbreak of the fire ‘the child the child’! Suddenly we found ourselves in the fire, at 6.30, a few meters from the sea, nothing less nothing more” he stressed. “My wife managed to get out of the car, but she didn’t manage to go further” added Mr. Dagalos.
“The event is still parallel to our lives, we can’t put it behind us or forward, because we have to go on. We are in a continuous process of recovering mental and physical injuries, because I was also a burn victim,” he explained.
“I cannot justify after 2.5 hours that we were a few meters from the sea listening to the explanation that the weather conditions, climate change, unregulated construction, I can’t accept all this. No one had notified us, nothing. We ask for justice, not for the people who left and are not coming back, but for the life that comes before us, so that this does not happen again. The recent incident in Serres confirms what we lack as a society, the responsibility of people in positions of responsibility,” stressed Mr. Dagalos.
