Kia Sportage: Car of the Year 2023

The Kia Sportage was named “Car of the Year 2023” for Greece in a celebratory event, which took place on the evening of Monday, December 12, 2022, at Domotel Kastri, with the participation of executives from leading companies in the sector, representatives of organizations and the central political scene.

The Korean SUV collected 399 points, leaving behind the Opel Astra with 276 points and the BMW X1 with 258 points. The final ten of this year’s public voting also included the Peugeot 308 (258 points), DS 4 (239 points), Toyota Yaris Cross (226 points), Dacia Jogger (218 points), Alfa Romeo Tonale (214 points), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (211 points) and Skoda Fabia (201 points).

The cars were evaluated based mainly on the needs and priorities of the average driver. The selection criteria concern technology, safety, quality, completeness of the range, environmental friendliness, as well as the cost of purchase and use.

It is recalled that the members of the journalistic institution “Car of the Year for Greece”, had gathered at the Megara Motorway, on December 5, 2022, where they once again drove all 10 candidate new models of the final phase: Alfa Romeo Tonale, BMW X1 , Dacia Jogger, DS 4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia Sportage, Opel Astra, Peugeot 308, Skoda Fabia, Toyota Yaris Cross.

Motoring is changing, as tackling climate change is forcing a major shift in the energy sector – and this in the automotive sector is in the form of the transition to electric mobility. Despite this, there is still a way to go for the total transition in our country and automotive journalists must cover all aspects of developments in the industry in order to inform the public in a timely and valid manner.

The President of the “Car of the Year for Greece” association, Nikos Lupakis, also mentioned the matter, underlining the role of the institution and each of the 25 electors separately, as “judges” of the most suitable new model for the Greek reality at the given time dot. The association has already completed 16 years since its foundation, it is constantly renewing itself and marching into the future, guided by experience, continuous knowledge and journalistic ethics.

In his intervention, during the ceremony of awarding the title “Car of the Year for Greece”, SYRIZA’s transport department head, Nikos Pappas, emphasized the development of the infrastructure in terms of the road network in Greece, in order to have efficiency in transportation, in an environment of economy, rational management of resources and a modern understanding of safe driving. He included motoring in a wider cycle of combined transport, while he emphasized the importance of the car market, which is a dynamic sector of the economy and stated that he considers it important to have continuity in dealing with the sector, as well as the wider field of transport in terms of state during the change of political forces in the government.

The President of the Panhellenic Association of Automobile and Motorcycle Journalists, Nikos Tsadaris, addressed a greeting, who wished for better days for the automobile market, which is going through another difficult period at the international level, a fact which affects in our country, the entrepreneurship of the sector, in this regard , journalism and jobs.

The surprise of the event was the presence of the Greek car designer Sotiris Kovos, our internationally renowned compatriot, who spoke about the achievements of his specialty and reminded in a illustrative way how cars evolve from the initial inspiration/idea to their final production.

The presenter of the whole evening was the journalist and actress, Ino Stefani. The organizer of the event was the GCC company. It is recalled that the organization for the selection of the car of the year for 2023 was sponsored by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, but also by the Panhellenic Association of Automobile and Motorcycle Journalists (PASYDAM).
