Bosnia and Herzegovina has started the process of joining the European Union. Foreign ministers approved the granting of candidate country status, which will be approved by the heads of state at the Summit next Thursday.

In essence, under EU law, the approval of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s candidacy is the first step in a long process of accession for the Balkan country of 3.5 million people.

Bosnia and Herzegovina applied for EU membership in 2016, but its application did not proceed.

Last June, EU leaders granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate country status.

Also, Kosovo is expected to formally submit its EU candidacy this week. However, the road to real EU membership remains long for all the countries of the Western Balkans, as well as for their neighbours.
