By the end of the day, prices from 20 toy chains will have been posted for Santa’s basket
The consumer basket it saves those who use it €796.74 per year, which is a basic salary, while, as shown by the data for the six weeks of implementation of the initiative, the prices of the basket appear to move against inflation, affecting overall food prices.
This was noted by the Minister of Development and Investments, Adonis Georgiadesin a press conference presenting the data in detail, while underlining that the consumer’s basket has an effect on the entire market and thanked the consumers, because with the gradual increase in their preference for it, they shape the prices of the following week, pushing for reductions.
As he noted, all the polls show that the trend is for this initiative to do better from week to week in consumer ratings.
The minister noted that it is not the goal to include additional codes in the basket because if the list grows, it will not have the intended results. Regarding the extension of the operation of the basket, the minister noted that all measures have a specific duration but depending on the conditions, it is not excluded that it may be extended, after a discussion with the Competition Commission.
Santa’s basket
As far as his basket is concerned Santa Claus, the minister said that by the end of the day the prices from 20 game chains and so far there are 15 companies that have posted prices for 800 game codesalthough the codes are expected to increase additionally.
The minister noted that no chain has objected to the prices presented in the list as the algorithm used by the ministry has been sent to all chains and they themselves check it.
Based on the data presented by the minister Adonis Georgiadesthe Deputy Minister of Development Nikos Papathanasisthe general secretary of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Sotiris Anagnostopoulos and Yannis Doxaras (whose company operates the e-katanalotis platform) shows that not only is inflation contained, but prices have fallen.
“This is a product of competition, it is not a product of intervention, but a product of the free competitive effort that the basket highlighted,” said Mr. Papathanasis, with Mr. Anagnostopoulos stating that “the consumer saves one and a half basic salary per year.”
From the data presented by the leadership of the Ministry of Development the price in the average basket from 124.60 euros in the first week fell to 109.8 euros in the sixth week. Without the participation of electronic supermarkets, the weighted price of the basket from 115.6 euros has decreased to 98.51 euros.
For example, the price of pork fell from 5.77 euros to 4.73 euros per kilo, chicken from 3.90 euros to 3.26 euros, cold meats from 6.26 to 5.48 euros, while milk had an increase within in-basket 0.91% and out-of-basket 3.37%.
As the minister noted, “citizens have the possibility to buy products at a fixed price or at lower prices, while without the basket the prices would run with inflation” He cited sugar as an example because although inflation runs at 10% per month the consumers find sugar at a fixed price within the basket. The only increase, he said, was in loaf bread, and he added: “It puzzles me why this has happened as the price of flour is falling. We expect it to fall.”
Yannis Doksaras reported that the platform had 360,000 downloads since its inception, 231,000 unique visitors enter every Wednesday and there are 221,000 personalized baskets with the participation of 13 physical and 3 online stores, 1000 products every week and as far as Santa’s basket is concerned, 16 chains and more will be added to reach 20.
