As reported by posts on the country’s state-controlled social networking sites
A brutal wave of Covid is hitting China just weeks after the sharp easing of strict lockdown measures that sparked mass protests against the government and Premier Xi Jinping.
Hospitals are “flooded” with patients, fever clinics have long queues of people waiting for treatment, while the number of doctors and nurses falling ill is increasing, according to posts on the country’s state-controlled social media networks.
Officially, China’s case numbers are falling, but only after the national health commission announced it had stopped recording infections with few or no symptoms – which make up the bulk of the daily totals.
Experts had warned that China would be hit by a new wave of cases as it eased restrictions, while Beijing’s vaccines are believed to be less equivalent than those in the West.
Analysts who spoke to the Daily Mail stressed that the risk of China’s health system being overwhelmed is “significant”, so deaths will start to rise because people will not be able to access care.
“Our hospital is full of patients. There are 700 to 800 people who come with fever every day,” said a doctor surnamed Li at a hospital in Sichuan.
“We are running out of stocks of fever and cold medicine, now we are waiting for delivery from our suppliers. Few nurses in the fever clinic have tested positive, there are no special protective measures for hospital staff and I believe many of us will soon be infected,” he added.
