“Lifting” in Electric: 14 trains are being upgraded – Interventions at the stations

What does the upgrade of the trains and the interventions at the stations of the “historic” Line 1 of the Athens Metro (Electric) include?

The contract for the complete upgrade of 14 trains of Line 1 of the Athens Metro (Electric), was signed today between STASY and the contractor company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Costa Ach. Karamanlis.

The object of the project is the complete upgrade of 14 trains that entered service between 1983-1985 and have exceeded their expected lifetime of 30 years.

“Today we are putting an end to a thirty-year cycle of disinvestment in Line 1 of the Metro, the historic line of the “electric” line of Athens, for the older ones,” said the minister.

The upgrade includes:

– Replacement of old and energy-consuming DC traction motors with modern AC motors

– Replacement of traction system, rotary generator, air compressors and pneumatic system

– Upgrade of the air conditioning system, facilities for disabled passengers. But also

– a total and substantial aesthetic “facelift” of the trains.

The upgraded trains will be operational for another 25 years.

The delivery of the trains will be done in phases – starting at 19 and ending at 34 months.

Four interventions worth more than 2 million euros will follow immediately at Line 1 stations as well.

“We have prepared – together with the STASY administration – a 10-point plan for the further upgrading of the services provided,” said Mr. Karamanlis.

The interventions at the stations of Line 1 of the Athens Metro (Electric), include:

1. Reconstruction of fencing along Line 1, budget 761,000 euros. The tender process has started in November 2022 and the contract will be signed in February 2023.

2. Anti-slip protection of Line 1 stations, budget 154,250 euros. Application of special treatment to create an anti-slip surface on exposed surfaces (floors, stairs). The tender process is ongoing and the contract will be signed by the end of 2022.

3. Painting works on iron structures and roofs, according to the estimation of Line 1 stations, with a budget of 780,000 euros. The tender has been posted in the first ten days of November and the contract will be signed in January 2023.

4. Replacement of existing lamps with LED type lamps, for better lighting of the stations and energy savings, budget 400,000 euros. The tender process has started in November 2022 and the signing of the contract in January 2023.

The total cost of the above interventions amounts to 2,095,250 euros.

The contract was signed by the managing director of STASY, Mr. Athanasios Kotaras and the CEO and member of the executive committee of CAF SA (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles), Mr. Urtzi Montalvo Ibargoyen. The Minister of Transport, Mr. Yiannis Xifaras, the president of STASY, Mr. Haris Damascus, Mr. Mikel Maiz (Managing Director, Engineering Modernizations) and the sales manager, Mr. Inigo Ruz de Apodaca, attended.
